Project Details

Coffee farmers in Uganda are increasingly vulnerable to climate change, including rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, prolonged droughts, and pests. These pressures threaten both the productivity and quality of coffee, which acts as the main source of income for many smallholder farmers. However, in rural Uganda, these farmers have limited access to improved technologies, climate-resilient seed varieties, and training.

With funding support from ADA as part of the SSNUP programme, we are partnering with Banyakole Coffee services to deliver an 18-month project with the aim of addressing the increasing threat of climate change. 300 project participants will receive training on climate-smart techniques, including watershade management, agronomic practices, agroforestry and agribusiness skills. This will be supported through demonstration plots to showcase best practices and resilient coffee varieties.

Additionally, the project will focus on reducing post-harvest losses by introducing fruit and shade trees alongside coffee production. This will help improve soil health and provide farmers with additional sources of food and income. Farmers will also benefit from access to weather information through community radio broadcasts, enabling them to make informed farming decisions.

By improving coffee productivity, strengthening environmental sustainability and increasing income opportunities, the project will establish more resilient farming systems and help secure the livelihoods of coffee-growing families.

Project objectives

  • Strengthen climate resilience and sustainable coffee production for 300 smallholder coffee farmers through climate-smart farming practices.
  • Establish three demonstration plots exemplifying climate-resilient coffee production.
  • Reduce post-harvest losses and improve coffee quality through the installation of a solar dryer and the distribution of tarpaulins.
  • Increase farmers’ access to weather information supporting climate adaptation and decision-making.
  • Improve household incomes through increased coffee yields and enhanced coffee quality.
